Hello! My name is Pröstur - I am 37 years old, live in Hafnarfjörður (and always will!) and one of Iceland's finest Fisherman :) Apart from working on the Ocean, I love photography and put my heart & soul into everything that I do. I have two daughters with the third one on her way in April and I cannot wait to share my love for Ocean & Photography with her!
The way I got into becoming a fisherman is quite interesting - my father has been a fisherman all my life and as a kid, I was always curious about the work he did on the ship. However, I wanted to be different, so I decided to start building houses instead. I did that for a while but soon realized it did not make me happy one bit. So I decided to switch it up and give the ocean a try and instantaneously fell in love with it! What I love the most about being a fisherman is the camaraderie of my crew - we are one big family and weather the highs & lows of the ocean as one big, united group! Honestly, it doesn't feel taxing or even like work because I love what I do!
Another thing I love about being a Fisherman, especially in Iceland, is the weather - one minute it can be calm as a summer night and the next it can turn into a beast and trow you around! It's hard to put a pulse on what exactly makes me love the ocean - its this feeling of being at home with a crew that is your other family except with 14 extra brothers :)
I became a photographer by complete fluke - I would dabble in it when I was 13 years old with my mum's old 35mm fil camera and would develop the negative in school. As I grew older, my interest in Photography receded. However, once I started working on the Ocean, my interest & passion grew much stronger. You see as part of being a Fisherman, I started learning to dive and saw these amazing sights under water which were extremely mind blowing! I realized I had to share these sights with people and so bought a Nikon D300, an underwater housing and started taking photographs again! Once I got into underwater photography, I realized that people needed to see what we, as Fisherman, did on a day-to-day basis. So I started taking pictures on the ship as well! Now I always have my camera on me and have been able to capture some stunning moments of the ship & crew. You can find some of my work right here
Back to my life as a Fisherman, all my expeditions have been smooth with a certain level of adventure involved. However, I remember this one time, when I was on my old ship on the Norwegian ocean, there was such a bad weather that we had to get cover on a small island which already had 10-16 ships just waiting for the weather to calm. To this date, I had never seen such a bad weather!
Anyway, now that you know about my life as a Fisherman in Iceland, the below is what my typical day looks like when I am at home, relaxing with my family. And if you ever come to Iceland, two good tips to remember is that you can drink tap water without any issues AND to shop food, go to Krónan or Bónus - these have the best prices in town!
